More than 100 volunteers from Victoria’s Secret Direct, the catalogue and ecommerce division of Victoria’s Secret, participated in community-based initiatives during the company’s Community Care Weeks, from July 26 through Aug. 6. The majority of the efforts benefited the Children’s Hunger Alliance (CHA), a statewide nonprofit organization committed to breaking the cycle of childhood hunger and obesity in Ohio through education, leadership, advocacy and service.

Volunteers had the opportunity to renovate and “makeover” home-based child care play areas by removing worn down, smaller play sets and replacing them with larger, sturdier, safer ones. The play area renovation projects were part of the CHA’s Building Blocks Program, a program designed to create a safer and more enjoyable living, learning and playing environment for home providers, after-school sites and the children in their care. Building Blocks, modeled after popular home renovation TV shows, helps low-income children and their communities.

In addition, Victoria’s Secret Direct along with several other local companies supported the Children’s Hunger Alliance fourth annual “Summer Field Day” to share with children the importance of good nutrition and living healthy, fit lifestyles. More than 175 hunger-threatened children ages 1 through 18 participated in activities which included fitness games, arts and crafts, face painting, airbrush tattoos and a clown. In Ohio, these lessons are critical because 17 percent of all third graders are considered obese and another 18 percent are considered overweight.

“It was very important for us to participate in these community service projects because social service funding continues to decline and most often the victims impacted by it are the children,” said Stefanie Little, Senior Human Resources Coordinator for Victoria’s Secret Direct.
